چکیده

A model is presented to calculate the light-scatter properties of nucleated blood cells which are mimicked by two concentric spheres. The light-scatter characteristics were derived from the Rayleigh-Debye-Gans approximation and by simultaneous application of field averaging of the internal field and modification of the propagation constant inside the different cellular compartments. It is shown that the results obtained with this simple model are similar to those obtained with more complex and more exact theories. In addition it is demonstrated that simultaneous detection of the light-scatter intensities in the forward-, lateral-, and backscatter directions is required to optimize the detection of different cell types in heterogeneous populations of nucleated blood cells.

Effect of the size and shape of a red blood cell on elastic light scattering properties at the single-cell level

We demonstrate the use of a double-beam optical tweezers system to stabilize red blood cell (RBC) orientation in the optical tweezers during measurements of elastic light scattering from the trapped cells in an angle range of 5-30 degrees. Another laser (He-Ne) was used to illuminate the cell and elastic light scattering distribution from the single cell was measured with a goniometer and a pho...

Coupled Dipole Simulations of Elastic Light Scattering on Parallel Systems

The Coupled Dipole method is used to simulate Elastic Light Scattering from arbitrary shaped particles. To facilitate simulation of relative large particles, such as human white blood cells, the number of dipoles required for the simulation is approximately 105 to 106. In order to carry out such simulations, very powerful computers are necessary. We have designed a parallel version of the Coupl...

Evaluation of a parallel FDTD code and application to modeling of light scattering by deformed red blood cells.

A parallel Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) code has been developed to numerically model the elastic light scattering by biological cells. Extensive validation and evaluation on various computing clusters demonstrated the high performance of the parallel code and its significant potential of reducing the computational cost of the FDTD method with low cost computer clusters. The parallel FDT...

Theoretical models for near forward light scattering by a Plasmodium falciparum infected red blood cell

A number of experimental elastic light scattering studies have been performed in the past few years with the aim of developing automated in vivo tools for differentiating a healthy red blood cell from a Plasmodium falciparum infected cell. This paper examines some theoretical aspects of the problem. An attempt has been made to simulate the scattering patterns of healthy as well as infected indi...

Investigation of Changes in Nucleated Red Blood Cells in Neonatal Infection

Background: Early diagnosis is paramount to the treatment of neonatal infections. Nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) are immature erythrocytes that increase in number due to stress and hypoxia. This study was conducted to determine NRBC count in the peripheral blood and examine its significance as a marker of neonatal infection. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 154 infants (78 ...
